We Are Saved by “Grace” Through Faith in Jesus Christ

Last updated on:

These first 16 verses all have to do with our own personal salvation in the Lord. Each one of these are major power verses and they all have to do with the first definition of grace – which is that grace is the unmerited favor and mercy of God towards mankind.

In these verses are complete and full revelation on exactly what our eternal salvation in the Lord is really all about. If you can grasp what the Lord is trying to tell you in these specific verses, you will then be able to walk away with a much better and clearer understanding as to who you really are in your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and exactly how you were saved in the first place.

I will go ahead and run all of these verses together, and then point out key words and phrases in these verses so you can see exactly what God is trying to show you.

  • For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone boast.” (Ephesians 2:8)
  • “… who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.” (2 Timothy 1:9)
  • And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work.” (Romans 11:6)
  • “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” (Romans 5:1-2)
  • For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men …” (Titus 2:11)
  • But we believe that through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved in the same manner as they.” (Acts 15:11)
  • “But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.” (Ephesians 2:4-7)
  • “… that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” (Titus 3:7)
  • “… for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus …” (Romans 3:23-24)
  • “For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.” (John 1:17)
  • “Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself, and our God and Father, who has loved us and given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace …” (2 Thessalonians 2:16)
  • In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence …” (Ephesians 1:7-8)
  • “For if by the one man’s offense, many died, much more the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abounded to many.” (Romans 5:15)
  • “… having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He has made us accepted in the Beloved.” (Ephesians 1:6)
  • But where sin abounded, grace abounded much more, so that as sin reigned in death, even so grace might reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 5:20)
  • I do not set aside the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died in vain.” (Galatians 2:21)

The first thing to pick up from these verses is that our personal salvation in the Lord is not earned by any type of good works that we can do in this life – no matter how many good works we may end up doing, and no matter how good and holy those works may end up being. The quantity and quality of our works for the Lord do not matter to Him.

The very first verse listed above is the absolute number one power verse on exactly how we are to receive eternal salvation from the Lord. This verse specifically tells us, without any other possible spin or interpretation you can possibly put on it, that our individual personal salvation in the Lord can only be received by “grace” through our personal faith in Jesus Christ.

This first verse, and the two that follow right after it, specifically state that our eternal salvation is simply received by grace through faith – not by any type of works. The first verse tells us that our eternal salvation is a direct, free gift from God and “not of works.” The second verse once again says that God has saved us through His grace and not “according to our works.”

The third verse then really hammers this point home when it literally shouts out that we cannot be saved by both grace and works. It says if we are saved by grace, then works has no part in our salvation whatsoever. You cannot have this revelation both ways. If we are saved by grace, which we are, then works has absolute no part in our personal salvation with the Lord. It’s all Him and none of us. The first verse says that being saved by grace through our faith in Jesus all comes direct from God and that it is “not from ourselves.”

As simple as this revelation is to fully grasp and understand, there are still some Christians who are walking around thinking that they still have to try and earn their way into heaven by doing as many good and holy works as they possibly can.

As a result, they spend most of their life in misery and torment as they never know for sure if they will make it into heaven after they die and cross over. These first set of verses are absolute top priority for any newborn who has just been saved or any unbeliever you may be witnessing to.

Bottom line – eternal salvation is received direct from the Lord as a free gift and it can only be received by grace through our personal faith in Jesus Christ and His sacrificial death on the cross. Salvation is simply just a matter of believing – and then accepting Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior once you are ready to admit that you are truly a sinner in need of a personal Savior to save you from your sins.

I am going to highlight some of the key phrases in the above verses so you can see how the Lord is really trying to drive home the point that we can only be saved by and through His grace.

  • For by grace you have been saved through faith
  • Who has saved us … according to His own purpose and grace
  • We have access by faith into this grace
  • For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men
  • Through the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ we shall be saved
  • By grace you have been saved
  • Having been justified by His grace
  • Being justified freely by His grace
  • Grace and truth came through Jesus Christ
  • Given us everlasting consolation and good hope by grace
  • In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace

Notice in every single one of these key phrases the word “grace” is specifically being used in reference to our own personal salvation in the Lord.

With the basic definition of the word “grace” being “unmerited favor,” there can be no question that our own personal salvation in the Lord can only be received by God’s grace through our faith in His Son Jesus.

No amount of works, no matter how good and holy we think those works may be, will ever be good enough to get us back in the good graces of our Lord and Savior.

Ritualism, legalism, and works are out the door!

They have no place in our personal salvation with the Lord – and they have absolutely no place when working with an unsaved person in an effort to try and get them saved. God has made accepting His free gift of eternal salvation through His Son Jesus Christ as easy as He possibly could.

These Scripture verses are as clear as they can possibly be on this issue.

  1. Well I agree with all that you teach; however, your rebuke of Anne about the ” baby Christian ” comment is incorrect! Paul said, in essence, ” why am I still feeding you milk like a baby, when you should be eating the meals His word?” When we are newly saved we ARE babes in Christ. Only through exhaustive Bible study and prayer do we become a mature Christian! Yes as soon as I accept His gift of salvation, I a just as saved as the person that has been saved 5o years; but, I am still a babe in Christ, lacking knowledge of Him and all things Christ

  2. I thank Jehovah God for your message on the Grace of God. May God give you more revelations on all Bible topics, in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen! This is the good news, being saved by grace not works. The grace of God keeps one from sinning wilfully.

    • We should start the Christian Life with Grace.
All that we are through the Grace of the Lord.
But we are trying to achieve the Plan that God has kept for us.
The one who call us He is Faithful in GRACE…!

  3. Hello,

You are right about all the scriptures regarding ones’s salvation. Praise Jesus! But, once we have received Jesus as our Lord and Savior THEN we must be about our Father’s business ….spreading the gospel, helping others, teaching, preaching, praying for the salvation of our family, friends, witnessing to neighbors, showing the love of Christ by giving our TIME, TALENT and TREASURE for God’s kingdom.. and most important seeking our Lord, worshipping Him, Praising Him and giving Him all Glory and Honour….in JESUS NAME and READING HIS WORD DAY AND NIGHT.

    JOSHUA 1:8
This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

I find it actually DANGEROUS if a baby Christian reads what you wrote because they would think…”I’ve said the sinners prayer, accepted JESUS Christ…I’m all set” and go on living their same selfish, sinful life…..BECAUSE you said WORKS ARE OUT THE DOOR and didn’t mention any of the following scriptures…

    James 2:17
So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

    Galatians 6:9-10
And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.

    Philippians 2:12
Wherefore, my beloved, as ye have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling.

    John 3:3
Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.

BORN AGAIN…I believe this means to become a new creature in Christ Jesus which can only happen by reading God’s Word (BIBLE) EVERYDAY! …which means baby Christians who are new believers MUST READ THE BIBLE… EVERYDAY so they can grow in Christ.

There are so many more scriptures but I only slept a few hours so I’m exhausted right now BUT I would love to hear back from you. Also, I want you to know that I wrote everything with LOVE…if I capitalized words or put exclamation marks sometimes that gives a negative connotation and that was not my intention. So please forgive me if I sounded harsh.
    Thank you and God bless,
    Anne S. 🙂

    • Anne S. Praise the Lord ,,I can’t add a thing to you comment, You are right on

      • Good morning Anne,
First of all I do not comprehend why you use the term ” baby christians”
There are no super christians, baby christian or whatsoever is used to measure ones faith. Faith in Jesus Christ and Salvation are not measurable so nobody will boast about their being saved more than you.Salvation is not about what you do for the Gospel(your work), it is thru the work of Jesus. He who believes in the death and ressurrection of Chris for for redemption of our sins will be saved. That is all simple.
The rest is religion that is misleading and dangerous because it is how we (imperfect ,sinful beings) think not to relate to God.
You can read your bible daily 1 million time and I will read mine once a year, we still saved. Those who think they are the first , will the last , and the last will be the first:
The thief on the cross dying with Jesus was saved.
Mary Magdalene ,a prostitute, was accepted and saved.
Paul, a hater of Jesus and Christians, was chosen by Jesus .

The pharisees who pretended to have superior knowledge of YAHWEH and have superior sanctity, praying every day , every minutes could could not recognize HIM,
as Jesus God human reincarnation. They hate and killed Him.
If you do your work( read your bible, pray , be nice, love other, help other, spread the bible , etc……) that is good. God and every human being will value your work, but your work is not going to save you.But the Son of God Work will .
We should humble like Jesus. Not to look down other christian calling them ” baby christian”.Jesus did the work so nobody should boast about their salvation for fear the devil use it to divide christians into less saved, saved , more saved, super, saved excellently saved, hyper saved.
        Have a bless day sister

        • Amen Brother Richard. This is the whole truth. The enemy has Gods people in conflict with each other in how we are interpreting God’s word. It shouldn’t be controversial. The truth is the truth. God’s Word doesn’t change. I know that we as His children are call to represent ( be ambassadors for) Christ in this world by how we live. With loving kindness have I drawn you. The fruits of the spirit Love, peace, long suffering, joy, patience, meekness, kindness, self control and goodness. Above everything else It is LOVE By His LOVE does grace come to us thru faith in Christ Jesus. Not works. But because we are His true children we have put off the old man and became new creation in Christ. Christ said to His disciples that the greatest commandment was to LOVE GOD with all your heart , soul and mind and LOVE your neighbor as yourself. The great commission was to go in all the world and make disciples for Him. Show the world His LOVE for them thru our lives as His children. Because we are to love one another as He LOVE us. By His Spirit the world will know that we are His disciples. The fruits of His Spirit.
Amen. I’m just saying lets take focus off making Gods word controversial and strive as brothers and sisters in Christ. Lets work because we LOVE HIM and want to see others save BY HIS GRACE!!!
          Thankful Heavenly Father

        • Whaaaat? I love babies! Who doesn’t love babies? Babies are so precious and fresh from heaven, without the heavy weights of the world on them. Clean and fresh, their skin glows and we want to cuddle and hug them. The smell so amazing, even their poop is adorable. This is the state of those who have just begun their new life when they are born again and become babies in Christ. Not a name called to deride or cause a division, but to recognize that they need to learn to walk and talk. Blessings to all children of God!
