Renewed – Regenerated By Holy Spirit

Regeneration by the Holy Spirit

Once we receive the Holy Spirit into our human spirits at the moment of our conversions to the Lord, another very powerful thing will then happen. Our human spirits will be immediately and instantaneously regenerated by the Holy Spirit.

Here is the verse that will give us this specific revelation from the Lord:

“But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior, that having been justified by His grace we should become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.” (Titus 3:4-7)

Notice two very important things in this verse:

First, this regeneration is being directly tied to us getting saved in the Lord. The words “but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit “ are definitely telling us that we are saved by God’s grace and mercy and that when He does save us, He is saving us “through” the regeneration of the Holy Spirit.

Second, this regeneration is being done directly by the Holy Spirit Himself. The words “regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit” are telling us that this regeneration is being done directly by the Holy Spirit Himself.

Here are some very good definitions from some of the different Bible Dictionaries and Commentaries on what the word “regeneration” means.

  1. Spiritually reborn
  2. Spiritual rebirth producing a new beginning
  3. A spiritual rebirth, being renewed, reformed or reconstituted
  4. Renewed or restored after a decline to a low condition
  5. New birth, the begetting of new life
  6. Renewal of moral and spiritual nature
  7. The rebirth of the human spirit to a restored relationship with God – Renewed to life and salvation by faith in God
  8. An act of God through the Holy Spirit resulting in an inner, personal resurrection from sin to a new life in Jesus Christ
  9. The radical spiritual change in which God brings an individual from a condition of spiritual defeat and death to a renewed condition of holiness and life

We have another article in our site that covers this event very thoroughly. The title of this article is, “Regeneration by the Holy Spirit,” and it is in the Bible Basics section of our site.

As a result of this regenerative work that is immediately and instantaneously done by the Holy Spirit at the moment of our conversions with the Lord, our human spirits are immediately “born again.” Here is the verse direct from Jesus Himself telling us exactly what it means to be born again with Him:

“… I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God … unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” (John 3:3,5)

Notice that being born again is referring direct to being born of the Holy Spirit Himself. In other words, if you do not have the Holy Spirit living on the inside of your human spirit, then you are not truly born again in the Lord.

It is only when the Holy Spirit comes and enters into your human spirit are you truly born again in the Lord – and the only way to be able to get the Holy Spirit to enter into your human spirit is to be willing to accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior. There is no other way into the kingdom of God. We either come through Jesus and the blood that He has personally shed for all of us on the cross or we do not come through at all.

As a result of being truly born again, our spiritual relationship with the Lord has now been fully restored. We are now brand new creatures who have now been given a brand new life with the Lord. The Bible tells us that all old things have now passed away and that all things have now been made brand new.

The regeneration of our human spirits by the Holy Spirit is a very powerful, supernatural work that is done by the Lord so He can get all of us back into right relationship with Him. Unless you have the Holy Spirit living on the inside of your human spirit, you will have no lifeline, no inner connection back to God the Father who dwells in heaven. You will be spiritually dead with Him until the Holy Spirit comes to live again in your human spirit.

Due to the extreme importance of this supernatural work that is done by the Holy Spirit at the exact moment of each believer’s conversion to the Lord, this revelation from the Word of God must also be included as one of the basic fundamental tenets of the Christian faith.

This is part 11 of our 13 part series on the Basic Tenants of our Christian Faith.

  1. Wow! I really am at a lose for words here. I really don’t know what you were trying to say here with this half truth you just wrote. No wonder Christians are so confused. The water baptism must take place before the baptism of the Holy Spirit, there is no way around that unless you are saying the Bible is only half right in itself. The baptism of water proclaims your faith in Christ, under the water to the grave, up from the water- the resurrection of Christ. After showing proof of our faith in Christ, then comes from Him the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Spirit meaning “FIRE”. If the Bible is the true and Holy Word of God, “God cannot lie,” then the baptism of water cannot be denied by any preacher or church. Unless as you yourself has said, is a false religion and false teaching.

    • The water baptism is strictly a public demonstration of the inward receiving of the Holy Spirit when one accepts Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. John the Baptist baptized with water, and told all that Jesus would baptize with the Spirit. When Jesus sent His disciples out on the great commission of telling the whole world the Gospel, He instructed them to baptize in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. That said, I agree that the understanding in the information presented, on which you commented, is off base and misleading. There is a difference in receiving the Holy Spirit and being filled with the Holy Spirit. The first is automatic when one gives their heart to Christ, and the other is realized when we surrender all control to the Holy Spirit.

    • Please read Acts 11 verses 11-17
The work of Salvation the guideline Jesus gave us however, The Holy Spirit can choose to fall on some whiles being thought Salvation. It’s important we do not allow religion to mislead us by saying; one has to get saved then baptism of water them be filled with the Holy Spirit. The above comment about Carla. Like the Lord’s Prayer Jesus thought the earlier christian we guide lines so let us be careful how we ruin out when Holy Spirit decide to work in different ways. I thought the article is good.

    • In Acts 17 it gives us an example of Cornelius being saved through the ministry of Peter. Verse 47 says Cornelius had received the Holy Spirit before being baptized . Acts 9:17 also we see Paul being called a brother by Ananias a chritian before he is baptized. In 1 Corinthians 1:14-25 v14 Paul says I only baptized 2 people. v16 he says he also bapized stephanas family. v17 he says Christ did not send him to baptize but to preach the gospel. v18 says the preaching of the cross is the power of salvation. Just a few scriptures to consider. Have a wonderful day

  2. The difference in Regeneration & Renewing is the same as in John 20:22, Jesus breathed on the disciples, and they received the Holy Ghost. However, they were not filled with the Holy Spirit until Acts 2 at Pentecost. And so renewing is being refilled. 2nd Cor4:16 “…yet the inward man is renewed day by day.”
Seek God daily and renew your mind and be filled by God’s Holy Spirit.

  3. THANK You! I’ m studying a course of Christian worldview and some of the material wasn’t
clear about Renewal in spirit. Thanks to your article this is understood. This website is booked-marked for future misunderstandings. The explanation is clear & straightforward.

    Many Thanks!!
