The Interpretation of Tongues

Last updated on:

This next gift is where the Holy Spirit will give you the interpretation of the tongues that you have either done for yourself or when they are being done by someone else in a church setting.

Here are the two main verses telling you where the gift of interpretation will come into play with the gift of tongues:

  1. “If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret. But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God.” (1 Corinthians 14: 27-28)

  2. “Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret. For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.” (1 Corinthians 14:13-14)

The first verse has to do with others interpreting a tongue when it is done in a church service. The second verse is showing you that the Holy Spirit can give you the interpretation of your own tongue as you are praying in it all by yourself.

Again, another very powerful gift that you can ask to receive from the Lord if you would like to tread into these kinds of deeper waters with Him.

  1. I recently began singing from the spirit, that is, singing in tongues. One day, while singing, the Holy spirit translated the words I was singing and it was a Holy God honoring psalm – but today I do not remember the lyrics lol. . . But now I do it all the time, that is, singing in tongues.

  2. Very Often i was led to pray in tongues all of a sudden. this goes for 10 to 15 Minutes. But i could not have any interpretation of what i have prayed in tongues. Sometimes the tongues were changing frequently while praying. Since 1 Year when am speaking to my friends my tongue slips and get’s into praying in tongues . Could you guide me how shall i proceed.

  3. I’ve noticed that when I begin to pray in unknown tongues, it is always interesting what I may hear, or the sounds that come forth from my mouth because it is generally always different. With that in mind, does anyone have any practical experience in interpreting their own tongues? What I mean is, it seems hard for me to discern weather or not, the thoughts that come to my mind when I am praying in unknown tongues is the interpretation or my own thoughts. If it is indeed both, how to determine separate the thoughts from my own, and the interpretation that the Holy Spirit gave me.

To give an example, if I were to ask the Holy Spirit to interpret these unknown tongues that I am fixing to speak, and/or ask Him in my mind while praying in unknown tongues, I have not felt full assurance weather it is my thoughts only or the interpretation.

It sure would be great to find someone who has really understood this gifting/manifestation on interpreting tongues as I’d like to be in a place when sharing my testimony with other christian brothers/sisters that I can give them the edification/interpretation for the unknown tongue to build up the church as He wills.

    • Hey J. I have recently and it was wonderful. So from what I understood, you are asking whether it is possible to interpret tongues and how to recognise it. I have an answer for that in this post. I hope you don’t mind reading because this will be quite long.

So I was just praying with a group of friends and I was praying and the Lord prompted one of us to pray in tongues and ask for the interpretation. We were then going to share what God said at the end of the session.

We started praying and personally, when I started speaking, I started understanding what I was saying in English. Every thought was spontaneous, speaking of praises to God in Psalms that I knew but didn’t know well.

After praying, we shared what we got and another friend got the same interpretation as I did, confirming the tongues.

From this experience, I took away two things that I believe you should:

      1) Desire the gift of the Holy Spirit. First Corinthians 12:31.says that “we must desire the most helpful gifts.” Believe that God can give you the interpretation and ensure your faith is in Him alone. Remember, it is our faith that unlocks God’s heart, not our works.

      2) You will know when it is God. Your doubt is arising from the fact that you are not sure whether God is speaking or not. Don’t doubt! He has already given you recognition of His voice. Don’t look for a particular sound or feeling and just trust that you will recognise Him when He speaks. It sounds easy but it will take some practice. But remember, God has given you recognition of His voice. – “My sheep know my voice. They hear Me and they follow Me.” Jesus said in John 10:27.

Remember, God will always confirm His word and sometimes it takes you taking a leap of faith and trusting that what you hear is from Him. He will gently lead you to His voice.

      I hope this helps.

Father thank you for J. Thank you for all the things you are doing in his/her life. I pray that this word may be a seed that produces a fruitful relationship with You. May you bless their finances, their life and may they flourish as they flourish in their relationship with you. May this help them in all things and may they continually pursue you. In Jesus name, Amen!

        Thank you Katai!
I read your reply to J; I’ve been having the same question for such a long time! It’s comforting that one other in your group received the same interpretation. This has helped me also; thank you so much! Now, why would I not ever think to ask Him, when I ask Him everything else? I ask Him where I
left my cell phone, my keys, my purse! Where does He want me to read before I begin my praise and worship? And I don’t to ask this? You’ve got your mind in gear; I lost mine!

        Thanks again!

    • When you have these thoughts, just start speaking them out loud and watch what God will do. You will be amazed

  4. This is where you need to pray for discernment that the both of you are actually hearing or feeling from the Lord that these people do or do not have the gift of tongues or interpretation of tongues.

  5. I was taking a course in koine Greek when this Greek professor told of an experience that he had with a tongue speaking group at an AOG church. He went to one of their meetings and rattled off one of the Psalm in Greek. He then related that this woman got up and gave an interpretation that was totally different from the Psalm. When he revealed what he had done, the entire group broke up in total bedlam. What this tells me is that those who claim to have the gift of interpretation really do not and I would suspect that many who claim the gift of tongues really do not but simply are babblers, having deceived themselves.

    • Amen. I believe there are many people who have deceived themselves into thinking they can speak in tongues or they “prophesy” over others in vague generalities that could fill a horoscope in the Times Union paper. I believe that the people of God need to practice more discernment.

      • And discernment is one of the gifts of the Spirit. I believe you and I am saddened.
I’m preaching on this tonight. Please do not let the fake turn you off to the real thing. Please know that the existence of a COPY is proof than the ORIGINAL or real thing does exist.

        • I agree Barbara! I have read something written in Hebrew before and I asked the Holy Spirit what it said and they Holy Spirit told me exactly what it said…. I copied and pasted the text into Google Translate later which is how I confirmed that I heard the Holy Spirit correctly in interpreting the Hebrew that I certainly didn’t know.

      • Interpretation of tongues is not the direst word for word translation of the utterance that was spoken, but rather God supernaturally allowing the interpreter to explain the meaning of the utterance, this explanation uplifts and comforts.

        • Bingo! Interpretation has started happening to me (I kinda wish it wasn’t). But I’m finding sometimes I understand certain words and other times I know a general understanding of what I’m saying, like I knew what I was praying for but not like literal word for word.

It mostly seems to be Bible verses but not exclusively. I don’t know, I’m still learning here

        • I would be afraid to play games like that with the Holy Spirit. I’m sure He doesn’t take it lightly when people make fun of things they should hold in reverence. I wonder how that came back to bite them later?
