All that my eyes desired I did not refuse them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure, for my heart was pleased because of all my labor and this was my reward for all my labor. Thus I considered all my activities which my hands had done and the labor which I had exerted, and behold all was vanity and striving after wind and there was no profit under the sun. Ecclesiastes 2:10-11
This is the question that most people are asking today as they keep looking for joy.
Looking at the way many are living, you’ll realize that real joy is lacking in their lives. Some have turn to seeking money and wealth, believing that once they have all money can buy, they will be able to buy joy too.
But they soon find out that joy is not in their money, but the money they have labored for had even brought greater sickness of the heart.
Some looked for joy in the area of fame, by distinguishing themselves in the profession and careers that they have chosen for themselves.
They eventually become celebrities that command fans everywhere. There names are always in the news, and their pictures are hot products sellers all over the world.
But despite the good look we see always on the television many of them ended up frustrated about life, and some even commit suicide.
Some sought for joy in power, they taught by acquiring power they will be able to control people, situations and circumstance, and they do all things imaginable to get to power; killing, maiming, cheating and all kinds of ungodly acts to secure posts and to retain it. Then they find out that uneasy lies the head that wears the crown.
Just like the writer of this passage, Solomon, who said that whatever his eyes sees he does not deny himself from getting them, so had many done to get happiness but it had eluded them.
It is only God who created the world that we are living in that can tell us how to get joy, and He had done that in the bible, the living manual that He gave to man, through which we can get fulfillment. Joy comes from reconciling with God (Matthew 6:33).
Just like any river that forgets its source will dry up, so also any person that is cut off or alienated from God cannot have true joy.
The Spirit of God in man is the giver of joy, if He is not in you, no matter how you want to fake it, you will not have joy. According to Galatians 5:22-23, joy is a fruit that will automatically manifest in you when you have the Holy Spirit.
Everyone that is born again is a carrier of this Joy which the world cannot have (Romans 14:17). There is joy in knowing that God is your father, and that He has prepared for your eternity and the good news here is that you can get this joy for free, all you need to do is to come to Jesus as you are. He will save you, and move you from sorrow to joy.
