Teach Us to Number Our Days

Last updated on:

Psalm 90:12 Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom.

This is one of the most neglected verses of the Bible, yet it is one of the most important. We do not know how to number our days, at least from the ways we live on daily basis, it shows clearly that despite our education, civilization, and computerized knowledge of counting, we still do not know how to count the number of our days.

This is very unfortunate as many who thought that they still have many days to spend on earth, and do what they like, found out to their surprise that they have miscalculated at the end. The truth is that whatever days that have been lost due to miscalculation or unprofitable engagements cannot be regained back (Ephesians 5:16).

The first thing we need to know from this verse is that God gave to us days, and not years, as many people have come to believe. Some are counting years, but God the owner of our lives is counting days. Your days on earth are numbered, whether you want to agree with that or not.

When we celebrate our birthdays, we always count the number of years we are marking, the truth of the matter is, that number of years we are marking had been taking away from the number of days we were given on earth, hence it not worth much celebration, at least not in the way majority of us do it.

When you have the understanding of God on how to spend your days you will know that you are not allowed to spend it anyhow. You have a very short time here on earth compared to where you are going after your departure (eternity). It is what you do here that will prepare you for that eternity.

Hence the book of Ecclesiastes 12:13 says;

“Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man. For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it is good, or whether it is evil.” (KJV).

God will bring everything we do into judgment at the end. Sit down and evaluate your life, out of the lot you have spent, how much have you given to your God. One day, He would say time up!, and then all will be over.

No one knows when the time shall be, but the truth is, no matter how long, that day will surely come. Are you prepared to meet your God?

  1. This has been a great reminder of the frailty and unpredictability of life. I always thank God for the SAVING GRACE He has extended to me through the shedded blood of His Son, Jesus Christ on Calvary’s Cross. In addition, I keep committing my salvation to Him because I BELIEVE with all MY HEART that He is able to keep what I’ve committed to Him until THAT DAY. All Glory and Honour to my FAITHFUL GOD!

  2. This article is a constant reminder that our life on earth is temporary. We have to prepare for eternity by living the way God wanted us to by following His Commandments. I keep forgetting, thank you for reminding.

  3. Teach us to make the most of our daily time to serve the Lord through others so that we may grow in wisdom. In this way, we are counting today, within the number of days God gives us to live.

  4. Every day is a blessing. We can do good or evil, but of what Jesus did for me at the cross, we should put on the full Armor of God and be led by the Holy Spirit and use our gifts for GOD> Thanks GOD for your grace, love and forgiveness. .

  5. blessed are those who sins are forgiven and i live everyday knowing my last hour will be up and beleive the grace of god will bring me where i need to go. thanks to god that a breathe life through him because he takes it and give it. amen blessing to you all children of god

  6. Thank you for this challenging reminder. I needed it today.

  7. I tell the LORD each day and sometimes each hour how much I love HIM. I do my best not to sin by constantly thinking of the LORD. I have come to realize that no one has control over life and death except only GOD it can come at anytime. I just rest in the truth of GOD’S WORD that HE loves us beyond any understanding and showed us through OUR LORD and SAVIOUR JESUS CHRIST. I just learned to be confident not in myself but in GOD that HE is all TRUTH and in absolute total control and that we will be saved through JESUS CHRIST for the simple fact that HE told us so as long as our heart is focused on HIM and do the best we could to try and be like JESUS and hear and keep HIS WORD. I do all I can do to love and help others as HE taught us. I love the LORD with all my heart, mind, & soul

    • Thank you for writing in detail. You inspired me to do the same. God bless you.

  8. Thank you for this article, “Teach Us to Number Our Days,” was absolutely eye opening to me and will and has changed my thinking on my 81 years (days) of life. A life changing piece for me. Again, thank you.

  9. Certainly, each and every day matters and should be counted worthy or unworthy, because its a day that would never return. The best thing should be considered is what am I gonna do today that would be counted worthy and the only way of knowing is to know your worth that its a purpose why you were created.

  10. Learn to count our limited & uncertain days and make each day counts – for the Lord! Seek after His will and gifts in our daily pursuit to testify & glorify His name before He calls us home to eternal glory. Everyday is God’s gift and blessing to us – it must therefore be cherished and fulfilled in a desirable and pleasing manner to the creator of our lives!
