Fasting Should Be A Regular Part of Our Christians Walk

If you want to hear a room get quiet, then just bring up the idea of fasting. I know I sure have looked the other way when fasting has been brought up.

I guess I just love my food too much, lol.

Now, I have fasted before but I will admit it has not been an integral part of my Christian walk. It has been few and far inbetween but I do believe this statement that fasting should be a very important and regular part of our Christian walk.

I’m going to open this up for discussion.  We love you all and love to hear everyone’s input on this topic.

The bible mentions fasting multiple times. For instance Matthew 6:16 says when we fast……. But beyond the bible, I have personally fasted when the Holy Spirit has led me to it, as well as when I needed to hear God clearer and I want to feel more intimate with him. When I have fasted in the past, that’s when I feel closest to God. I have become more sensitive to his presence and I gain a level of peace and joy that I don’t otherwise have. My glass is always full and sometimes even running over when I fast. Fasting allows me to see things spiritually and the insight that I have gained keeps me going when my natural man doesn’t understand whats going. So fasting is VERY important to me.

The Word of God that Jesus the Christ the Son of the living God states in Mark9:29
And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

The anointing or power that results from fasting is Holy and anointed and enables the true believer to perform the same works that Jesus the Son of the True living God did and greater. Further, in Isaiah 58:6 the glory and power of the fast which is consecration and purification of spirit brings strength and victory

    Read: Isaiah 58:6
Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?

    58:7
Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?

    58:8
Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy rereward.

    58:9
    Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;

    58:10
And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noon day:

    58:11
And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.

Now looking at Daniel and Jesus specifically the Holy Spirit must lead you on your fast and the servant must be willing to yield to the Holy Spirit.

Bottom line: Fasting illuminates the Word of God in your soul and spirit which is the indwelling of the Holy Spirit/Power we need to cast out demons/devils but without faith in the absence of fear no one can do this. That is why Satan and his minions set up shop in our hearts mind and souls to include THE CHURCH where Satan is very at home at because there is no power there. Just some good people they think doing the right thing but missing the mark. The power of the Fast is in Jesus the Word of GOD and the Holy Spirit. With love and prayer and blessings peace my beloved brothers and sisters in Christ!

P.S. I am convicted to follow the plan Jesus has laid out because he is soon to return and I desire to stand in power and confidence before the Son of Man! So I am fasting as the Holy Spirit leads me 1 minute, 1 hour, 1 day, 1 week, 1 month or whatever it takes to secure my crown and set the captives free!

    Sincerely,

    Jeffrey

Brittany Wou brought this up. All this week I’ve decided I wanted to fast during lunch. Mainly because I fee money l I’ve been spending way too much on eating out. Instead I want to use the money to sponsor a child. I figured I could sacrifice eating lunch for a week. I can only imagine the adults and children who have to miss meals due to poverty. It has been challenging. Mainly because when its lunch time my coworkers are asking me if I want to go out with them and when I refuse they ask me why I’m not eating. I feel fasting is sacred and people shouldn’t know or be able to tell when your fasting. Most times I will go to my car and pray or read the word while on my lunch. I haven’t had much success this week. With that being said, I’m going to start over and join in with the water fast. I want to be obedient and draw closer through prayer and fasting. Thanks again for sharing it has encouraged me to stay focused!

I believe it should be. Doesn’t it say in the bible somewhere, “when we fast” not “if”? I am not well-versed yet so forgive that I do not know which verse it is. The first time I did it, I did it at the request of my Lord at the beginning of my personal relationship with him. Boy, was there a difference in me after I came through it! I lasted 14 days. It was difficult not to eat because I love, love food! The benefit of that fast was not only physical where it removed some afflictions I had but I was able to hear the Lord’s voice so crisp and clear, it felt like he was sitting next to me for 14 days. I will never forget that experience. That definitely contributed to me becoming such a faithful, stubborn believer! I have thought about making it part of my walk but I haven’t followed through. I already weigh too little so I don’t want to lose more weight at this time. I do desire it and will at some point.

God usually leads me to complete fasts 2 times a week. Two days a week, but not 2 days back to back, like Sunday and Monday, but rather two days, but they are for example, Sunday and Tuesday or Monday and Wednesday etc. On the days after the complete fasts days ( only water), I get two meals a day. So, if I fast on a Sunday , then on Monday I get breakfast and evening dinner ( no lunch). Then my second day of the week to fast may be Tuesday, then Wednesday , I will get breakfast and evening dinner ( no lunch). Also, on the rest of the days of the week, which in this example, would be Thursday , Fri. and Sat., I just get one meal a day ( evening dinner). This is what I feel the Lord is telling me to do at this time and for quite a while now. He also only wants me to drink water between meals. Also, He is asking me to lay down coffee, tea, ( decaffeinated and caffeinated) soda ( caffeinated and decaffeinated) , diet drinks, drinks with Stevia, caffeine, drinks with saccharin, splenda or aspartame, I think juice also. I drink vegetable boullion and/or vegetable broth that I have by boiling veggies.
Is there anyone else out there that God is dealing with in this fashion?

  7. Fran - October 17, 2013 at 9:09 pm

    * I only drink vegetable boullion and/or my own homemade vegetable broth at meals. I think God wants me to only drink water between meals. I do not think He wants me to drink the vegetable broth in between meals. So, I just wanted to clarify that.

Fasting is very important for Spirial health . It has devine connection spiritually to the Mighty Lord . Some Spiritual war fares will not depart unless we engage in a spitual war fare . Fasting and Prayer go hand in hand . If we want to hesar from God , let us engage and have devine connect

I have seen this work . Iam now on a 24 hour fast and will be leading an overnight

If you desire to pray longer and have communion with the Holy Spirit, fasting is the fastest and best option.
Throughout my Christian life I have seen the benefit derivable from fasting, weather it is the complete Esther fast or the partial fast. I have had tremendous power to overcome habits, to get deliverance and to help others get their deliverance. I recommend fasting for the sick, for the Believer who seeks purpose and drive in his/her life and ministry. It works better than any medicine when done with intense prayer. I am a testimony.

  10. Emily Hwengwere - October 18, 2013 at 5:00 am

Fasting is indeed an important aspect of our Christian walk, I would lie to say I fast that often, but I do fast and all the time i have done so, I believe the Holy Spirit has pushed me to. I want to admit that there are times when I’ve heard that still small voice compelling me to fast but I have not done so. However whenever I fast, I feel my Spirit is much much stronger and i’m more sensitive to it than the flesh. I have also learnt that fasting is not meant to push God to do something, but is for my benefit, it trains my Spirit man because I will be denying the flesh. The biggest battle we have as Christians is the war between the flesh and the Spirit. When we are more sensitive to the flesh our faith suffers, unbelief creeps in and we just cannot walk in obedience to the word of God. When our Spirit is stronger, we are assured of victory as God’s children.

Listening to Andrew Wommack, I got an important revelation that when Jesus told His disciples that ‘this kind can only go through prayer and fasting’, He actually meant the unbelief of the disciples, so they could not cast out demons because of their unbelief! But with prayer and fasting it goes away. So now whenever I fast I feel so good denying the flesh and depending on my Spirit man to conquer hunger and desire for food and I know i’m getting better and better each time I fast. My prayer is that I remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit and be obedient to Him each time He pushes me to fast. He usually does that when i’m praying for something and I believe God will be pushing me to strengthen my Spiritual man so that I can conquer. Remember Jesus was tempted after fasting 40 days and 40 nights and he overcame because He was prepared. Lets be ready for any temptation through fasting, prayer and bible study and we will overcome every single temptation with Jesus’s help!

In addition to what I described above that I feel God is leading me to do pertaining to my eating, sometimes He has me do the same eating pattern, but I only eat food that would be allowed on the Daniel fast. Which you all probably know that the Daniel fast is no meat, no pleasant bread ( sweets, bread, no sugar etc. ) and no wine. I include no dairy or anything from an animal. And I don’t do oils so much, like some Daniel fast bloggers say is ok. Also, I think He wants me mostly off of salt during this time ( at least this last time). Anyhow, then when I get a release to go off the Daniel fast, I go back to the same eating pattern and I eat meat if I want. The Daniel fast is fruits, vegetables and proteins are derived from beans ( what I mostly use ) or you can get protein from nuts, quinoa, tofu, other places too if you investigate it. You can get unsweetened almond milk and probably unsweetened soy milk. Check the labels. But the Daniel fast is only for a season until God releases you, unless you choose to make it your way of life if you feel so led. But I keep the same pattern of eating ( as I feel this is how God is leading) and that’s whether I’m on the Daniel fast or off of it. So, even when I’m off the Daniel fast and am released from it , I’m still doing the two days a week complete fasting, and eating only when I feel the Lord is leading me on the other days ( which is not 3 meals a day for me) when I’m obedient.

Thanks Jeffrey, your comment inspired me to study the word about fasting. I do know that fasting is between the Lord and I; and should be done without complaining and showing that you are weak and hungry. If you are going to fast, which should be a spiritual thing done to died to self and increase in Him! I love Jesus! He died for me, so I could have eternal life! Thanks for this discussion.

  13. Iris - October 18, 2013 at 12:45 pm

I am in complete agreement with Emily Hwengwere. I also listened to Andrew Wommack on this same subject. We are to live through our spirit man and through the mind of Christ that is in our spirit man. The stronger our spirit man gets, the weaker the flesh and soul. Fasting should be a part of the Christian walk. I know the Lord is talking to me through this article and especially since Emily Hwengwere referred to the exact same teaching that I’ve been listening to. Thank you Emily and thank you Holy Spirit.

    Blessings, Iris

My experience with fasting varies. There are times the Lord empowers me to fast and other times, it could be an struggle. This shows that fasting is not just abstaining from food but it is an anointment by the Holy Spirit for a purpose. His promoting empowerment is crucially important.

  15. Angelica - October 23, 2013 at 8:38 pm

I wanted to add that when I have fasted, it has not only been from food but also from any media or any other pleasures. It truly has done wonders for my Spirit to abstain from these things because the focus is entirely on God.

  16. Fran - October 24, 2013 at 4:12 am

If you’re doing the Daniel fast, Daniel only drank water and ate fruits and vegetables ( pulse) . I assume, but don’t know for sure that legumes and nuts and seeds were included in his repertoire. He did not drink coffee on his fast. Only water in between meals. God is impressing upon me to not drink coffee at all ever, caffeinated or decaffeinated, but I think this is how He is leading me ( caffeine is a drug,a stimulant). Anyhow, my personal opinion is no coffee on a fast. When people fasted in the Bible, they used water.
Also, how many days can a person go with just water fasting? It would depend on how overweight you are somewhat, I would think, but even if someone’s overweight, it’s best to be led of the Holy Spirit and only do the number of days He is impressing upon them. Just because someone’s overweight and could feasibly go 21 days without food , doesn’t mean they should. Just ask the Holy Spirit and be led by Him. He will impress upon you how many days to do it and should let you know when you’re released. Maybe the Holy Spirit would lead someone to do a three day or seven day water fast and then switch over to the Daniel fast and do the rest of it for 21 days or 40 days.

@ Jeffrey, thank you for enlightening me in regards to the verses from Isaiah 58:6, which happens to be the verses I have be reading for the past 4 weeks. Yes, I am now, believe I am lead by the Holy Spirit to fast n speak out those exact “Words”. Praise God!

I am blessed from reading all the lovely comments above.I have learned a few things as well.God bless you all and I will continue to read.

  19. Jeffrey - October 26, 2013 at 3:05 pm

@ Karamea , I lift you up in the name of Jesus Christ the Son of the Living God and pray that the Holy Spirit leads you and teaches you what you need to know to grow in strength and power in Jesus. If we really listen it is Jesus that showed us the benefits of fasting and prayer which produces a oneness with the Father (Indwelling Intimate Personal Relationship) that enables us to truly be Sons and Daughters of God with power in deed and not in word only. Hear what Jesus the Word of God says about the written word, faith, prayer, fasting which is the power given to us to cast out demons, heal the sick, and raise the spiritually dead:
    Mark 9:17
    And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit;

    9:18
And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out; and they could not.

    9:19
He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me.

    9:20
And they brought him unto him: and when he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming.

    9:21
And he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child.

    9:22
And ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any thing, have compassion on us, and help us.

    9:23
Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.

    9:24
And straightway the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.

    9:25
When Jesus saw that the people came running together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him, and enter no more into him.

    9:26
And the spirit cried, and rent him sore, and came out of him: and he was as one dead; insomuch that many said, He is dead.

    9:27
But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up; and he arose.

    9:28
And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked him privately, Why could not we cast him out?

    9:29
And he said unto them, This kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting.

Karamea these are the words of the Son of God which I submit meditate on what Jesus is showing us here and what Isaiah 58:6 is telling us about the power of the fast that God has chosen which is the only one important in the time we are living. There is no value in saying we are soldiers for Christ when we do not believe in the weapons of the warfare that Jesus further exclaims is our purpose to walk in victory over the head of satan bruising his head with our heels all for the glory of our Holy. I am learning that the process Jesus calls for is complete obedience and self-denial. I believe or I know that as we allow the Holy Spirit to guide and teach us we come into the righteousness of God and all our other natural needs will be fulfilled as promised!
    Matthew 6:33
But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.

The kingdom of God is within you!

    Amen!

    Loving you in Jesus!

    Jeffrey

allow me to be the one to ask opinions of ‘The true fast’.
    Isaiah 58 (the whole chapter)
verse58:5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? [is it] to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes [under him]? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?

    no.

Hello everyone, forgive me if this is a duplicate post from a few days ago. I thought I had replied here but couldn’t find it and due to technical difficulties, we lost the last 3 days of comments.

Anyways, I wanted to let everyone know Tina and I started our first podcast the other day and it is on Fasting. Feel free to come over and listen and share some more wisdom.

You guys are great, lots of great comments here!!!

I personally fasted for the first time about 6 months ago for 3 days. It was an amazing tool. I grew closer to God than I thought possible. I was dealing with a demonically possessed loved one and had doubts. I’d seen the pastor deal with it but me? I’m a 40 year old 19 year law enforcement veteran. I fear no man but demons? Different story at the time. Now, I don’t fear them or the threats they spew out. It’s all lies folks. The first time demons manifest in the loved one for me personally was when I told her that she should consider fasting and praying. I began to speak of Daniels fast and I got to the part about the angel and then they manifest in her to keep her from hearing it and then lied to me.

I now fast whenever I have a crisis of, or rather any decline of faith. I am not a spokesperson for him, but I had questions about so many things that the “deliverance ministry” puts out as fact. I think some of it was derived from listening to what demons said, but Andrew Wommack has an amazing teaching on the Believers Authority. I balked at some of it but scripture sure shows what he says is true. I’ll take scripture over listening to demons for information. They are liars folks. If they say they are afraid of you, it’s possible (or rather who lives inside you) but that’s about the only truthful thing you may hear.
