1 – 4 Step Process To Get God To Move You Into The Sanctification Process
2 – How To Enter Into The Sanctification Process With the Lord

As you will see in the Scripture verses I will list in this article – God’s ultimate and highest aim for all of us is our sanctification in Him. God wants to make us more holy like Himself. He wants to transform us into the express image of His Son Jesus Christ. He wants to consecrate and set us apart unto Himself.

The wording in these verses is very intense. One of the verses will tell us that God wants to sanctify us completely in all three parts of our being – body, soul, and spirit. Jesus Himself tells us that He wants us to be perfect just like His Father in heaven is perfect.

When you first look at these verses, you wonder how anyone could ever begin to achieve any real state of holiness in the cursed and fallen world we all now live in. With all of the lusts of our flesh, and with all of the different types of temptations of this world, many Christians never even attempt to give God half a chance to start this sanctification process in their life.

They feel this bar is simply too high to even begin to strive for in this life.

The Bible tells us that all men and women have sinned and have fallen way short of the glory of God. We are so far from the perfection that God is really wanting from each one of us, that we see no real way to be able to obtain it to any significant degree in this life.

As a result, many Christians never ask or seek after God to get this sanctification process started in their life – and as a result, there is very little, if any true spiritual growth over the course of most of their lives.

However, if you will study the specific wording in some of these verses, God the Father is showing you very clearly how this sanctification process can start to occur in this life. You do not have to wait until you get to heaven to get this sanctification process started with Him.

One of the first verses I will list below is telling us that we get three specific things as a result of Jesus dying on the cross for all of our sins. We get redemption, righteousness, and sanctification.

Most Christians know about the first two – redemption and righteousness – but they either forget, or do not pick up on the third thing that we all have available to us – and that is our sanctification in the Lord!

This sanctification is a progressive process. It is not something that occurs instantaneously at our conversions. It is a progressive work done by the Holy Spirit over the course of our entire life.

The apostle Paul tells us that we have to “work out” our salvation with fear and trembling.

He is telling us there are things that have to be worked out – and I believe one of those things is our sanctification in the Lord – the process where God the Father begins to set us apart unto Himself and to transform us into becoming more holy instruments of righteousness for His use.

The different Bible Dictionaries and Commentaries define the word “sanctification” as follows:

  • The state of growing in divine grace
  • To set apart for holy purposes
  • The process of being made holy resulting in a changed lifestyle for the believer

Noted Bible scholar Jack Hayford, in his excellent book titled: ” Hayford’s Bible Handbook,” defines sanctification as follows:

“The work of God’s grace by which the believer is separated from sin and becomes dedicated to God’s righteousness. Accomplished by the Word of God and the Holy Spirit, sanctification results in holiness, or purification from the guilt and power of sin.

Sanctification is instantaneous before God through Christ and progressive before man through obedience to the Holy Spirit and the Word.”

To those of you who have never really sought after the Lord to release this kind of supernatural work in your life – study these verses very, very carefully. God is giving you an incredible spiritual secret that can dramatically change the quality of your life down here on this earth.

As I said at the top of this article, you do not have to wait until you get to heaven to have God start this sanctification-transformation process in your life. It can literally start right where you are at right now if you are willing to fully surrender your entire life over to the Lord and then ask Him to begin to start this sanctification process in your life.

Before I go to the actual Scripture verses on all of this, consider one last thing. Even though this sanctification process appears to be a major leap to be able to make in the Lord, realize that God will start you off with small baby steps to get this process worked into your life.

Rome was not built overnight, and neither will your sanctification in the Lord.

Many in our society have no drawing towards the spiritual things of God. Their only goal in this life is to get as much of the material things in this life as they possibly can, not really caring who they hurt and run over in the process.

Many think that trying to become more holy in the Lord is “corny.” Many of these types of Christians have been labeled as being “not cool” and “goody two shoes” by their peers, by their classmates, or by some of their fellow workers in the workplace.

Many of our teenagers are made fun of in their schools if they do not join the crowds in abusing alcohol, doing drugs, or engaging in premarital sex.

The ways of our God are not the ways of this world!

This is why God tells us that we will become His enemies if we ever become too friendly with the things and ways of this world.

This is why God is calling us and separating us unto Himself in this sanctification process that He wants to start with each and everyone of us.

To become more holy and more righteous in the Lord may not be cool with the rest of the world, but it is definitely cool with the Lord.

And when everything is all finally said and done, and we have finally departed from this life and have to face God for our own personal judgments – the only thing that will really matter is what God thinks, not what the world thinks.

We will all be judged by how God views things, not how the world or other people view things.

I will leave you with one last thought before going into the actual Scripture verses on this topic: If you really watch and study people – what is the one thing that most people are really searching for and seeking after these days?

Why is it that so many people are tempted to enter a life of drugs or alcohol abuse?

Why are so many people committing adultery behind their spouse’s back? Why are so many business-minded people chasing after their one and only all-personal god – the almighty dollar?

Why are so many people engaging with other alternative forms of spirituality, such as delving into the occult and the many facets of the New Age movement?

If you really bottom-line all of the seeking that is occurring in these areas – they are all looking for one thing – and that one thing is an incredible sense of well-being.

They are all looking for that “high” that will make them “feel good.”

To those who are seeking after the almighty dollar, they are looking for that high that will give them a sense of approval and a sense of accomplishment.

They are looking for all the material things that this money can buy them, thinking that all of these material things will make them feel good on the inside and completely fill the emptiness and void that is on the inside of each one of them.

To those chasing after drugs, alcohol, or illicit sexual encounters – they are looking for immediate gratification of physical, mental, or sexual pleasures.

They want to feel good right now, and they will do anything they can to try and get that next high.

However, as we all know, all of the free sex, drugs, and alcohol, and all of the money in this world, and all of the material things this money can buy us, will never buy us that true state of inner happiness, that true state of well-being that we are all really searching for.

All of the material things that we can buy in this life will only keep us high for a very short period of time. Then once that high starts to wear off, we have to find something else we can buy, thinking that the next new purchase will make us feel good for a longer period of time.

And then it happens again. That high starts to wane, and then we are once more looking for that next new material thing, that next new adventure that will make us feel good about ourselves.

Many people are constantly chasing the wind, but never really being able to reach it or grab a hold of it – thus always continuing to fall short of being able to reach that elusive state of well-being that will give them the love, joy, and peace they are really searching for.

Even many Christians are missing the mark on all of this. Too many Christians have become more attached to the things of this world rather than to God and the things that He wants us to get involved in. As a result, there are many Christians who are no more happy and no more fulfilled with their lives than many nonbelievers are.

Once you become saved and born again by accepting Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior – this is just the beginning. Now God wants to start to build you up in Him and all of His ways for your life.

The first thing that God will want you to do is to be willing to enter into a full surrender with Him so He can then set you up on the divine path that He will want you to follow in this life. The next thing God will want from you is that you attempt to establish a close personal relationship with Him.

However, this will now lead us right into the next big step. Many Christians have already done both of these things, but they still feel there is something missing in their lives.

They are following God’s perfect will and plan for their lives.

They know how to be led by the Holy Spirit on a daily basis to accomplish what needs to be accomplished.

They have established very good personal relationships with the Lord – but yet there still seems to be something missing in their lives and they cannot seem put their finger on it.

  • Where is that feeling of well-being that I should be having more of?
  • Where is that love, joy, and peace of mind I should be having more of?
  • Why is it that at times I am no more happier and no more fulfilled than many nonbelievers are?

I personally believe that the missing ingredient in many believer’s life is this sanctification process.

This sanctification process is a deeper work in the Lord, and many have not entered into it either because they have never been shown how to properly enter into it, or they really do not want to go this far with the Lord.

Once you enter into this sanctification process with the Lord, it can be a bit painful at times, since God will be working with you to fully expose and prune out all of the negative qualities that He will not want have operating in your personality.

I will be doing additional articles in the Sanctification Section of our site, giving you all of the main verses that will give you the specifics on what it is you should be seeking after in order to be able to work with the Lord in this sanctification process. As you will see in the some of the verses listed below, it is the Holy Spirit who will really be the One to sanctify you and help you to become more holy in the eyes of the Lord.

However, you will still have to do your part in all of this. As I said in another article in this section titled, “Mindset: Being Transformed by the Renewing of Your Mind,” you will have to be the one to attempt to “put on” the positive qualities that God will want to instill in your personality, and “put away” all of the negative qualities that He will not want operating in your personality.

You will have to really work with the Holy Spirit in order to be able to get God to move you into this deeper realm of making you to become more holy.

But for those of you who are willing to let the Lord take this next extra step with you – you will find and obtain what everyone is really searching for and cannot find these days – an incredible sense of well-being that all of the money, material possessions, drugs, alcohol, and sex will never be able to bring you in this life.

This incredible sense of well-being can only be found in the process of allowing God to work His very divine nature into your own personality, thereby making you to become more holy.

A perfect example of this is the 9 fruits of the Holy Spirit. These 9 fruits are His fruits, not ours – such as love, joy, peace, self-control, kindness, etc.

This means that God will start to transmit and impart His love, His peace, and His kindness into our personalities.

And once this kind of sanctification process starts to occur, this is when you will really be able to feel and experience the sense of well-being that God initially created all of us to have in Him.

It is only when the very life of God Himself, through the Holy Spirit, starts to enter into your mind, soul, and heart will you feel that high that everyone is really looking for these days.

And the only way that you can get the very life of God to start to enter into your mind, soul, and heart is by entering into this sanctification process with the Lord. There is no other way.

There are no shortcuts to this process. I really believe this is one of the main missing ingredients in many believer’s walks with the Lord.

Now I will go to the actual Scripture verses showing you that God really does want to start this sanctification process with each and everyone of us.

In part 2 of this series, I will give you a simple 4 step process to get God to move you into this sanctification process if you are not afraid of it and are willing to work with Him on it.

    Cynthia,
For this problem I was helped by spending an entire day praising God for everything good in my life until I ran out of things, and then for everything good I could think of about God. I never got to the end of that, but by the end of the day I had whole different attitude, and some of it stayed with me. Blessings

Very informative and helpful to me personally..I started a google search on “does God want to remove our personality?” I have come to the conclusion that He doesn’t want to remove or own personality (sense of humor, whatever )it as much as He wants to change our inner fleshly desires and fears that do not line up to the word of God.

The Holy Spirit led me to this article. I promise you I don’t know how I found it, but I do know that it has confirmed much of what I am living through right now, I am already in the sanctification process which I was unaware of until I read your article. A lot of questions were answered for me. I am very excited (nervous knots in the stomach excited) to have the answers I sought (and didn’t seek). Thank you.

So at what point am I totally filled with Holy Spirit and at some point do I
start speaking with a heavenly language that I might not understand
or should I not be concerned about this matter and just be totally filled
by reading The Word of God the Bible alone and just pray for God to keep
    me filled. Thanks John.

    • Mike - January 6, 2012 at 10:39 am

      John,

If you want the gift of tongues, simply ask God the Father in prayer for this gift. In the meantime, read the Word of God and draw close to the Lord in your own personal relationship with Him.

Mike, I am so very glad to have found your web site. Your Christian articles are great, very understandable, a delight to read, and so enlightening. Thank you! Your article on “Sanctification” is greatly needed by ALL Christians. It is a topic that most know nothing about and some (a few) don’t want to know about! But it must be said in order for God to do His work in those He deems necessary!

I have two Christian Study Groups on Facebook, and one blog page (not on Facebook). All three were started as “in-depth” Christian studies using the classics of Christian literature, commentaries, etc., as a starting point. I also include such modern day Christian authors as: Charles Stanley, Warren W. Wiersbe, David Jeremiah, Billy Graham. My favorites are: A. W. Tozer, Adrian Rogers, R. A. Torrey, Charles Spurgeon, William Barclay, Andrew Murrey, A. W. Pink, etc.

I would most humbly appreciate it if I could “quote” some of your Christian work. I have read many of your articles and I know, without doubt, that my members/friends would gain a much clearer understanding of their faith if I could use some of your work. I would only quote you unless, of course, I could use a few of your articles in their entirety! And, if I could, I will gladly put your name, website information, (anything you would like) on each article or quote I use. The information you are providing is oh so necessary, Mike! I am totally in love with what you are doing!

Please let me know your ideas on my questions. I am no writer but I am totally surrendered to God, and totally in love with Him – have been for over twenty years(!) and still can’t get enough of Him!

    Sincerely,

    Kathy

  13. Amy - January 9, 2012 at 2:30 pm

Thanks so much for this article! I never knew what I was thinking in the past, but I always thought that everything you’ve mentioned is what a true disciple of Christ should be going after anyways; I just never had the proper titles or names to put with it. Anyways, I thank you for your insight and obedience because I’ve tried for a long while to find something that will help me understand what true sanctification is and now I’ve found it. As I was reading this, I could feel God continue to stir in me about this issue (I had watched a video prior to coming here from a sanctified church). May God be with you and keep you as you continue to follow Him, in Jesus name! Amen!

It is Jan 14 2012 and first of for this year all I commit to take my life on a much deeper journey with the Lord. As some of you noted, you have no idea how you go to this site and I concur with you, but here we are. Those faithful In Christ do end up in the best of places. I truly believe that this “how to manual” will answer some of my best questions. I remember saying, Lord, change me, mould me, make me more like you, but I have no idea how to- well now I do. In one year from now I will be back to tell you how it went. God bless all of you, I am sinking into His presence and not sure who I will be when I come out. I will probably not even recognise myself. So I leave this note to all of you and to myself to remember that I was here.

    RIP old nature!

    Brother Mike,

I thank our Father for what He has done in your life, and your choice to obey. I was searching google for “holiness”, because I know the LORD requires us to be holy as He is. And I hunger & thirst for it, but I to know there is a battle between ones flesh & spirit. I thank the LORD that because of the blood of His Son, Jesus Christ, all who are willing can and will be set free from the bondage of sin. I’m exited to read the rest of these articles and dive head first in the Word searching Gods will and seeking His face. I love how you broke everything down in steps and let the Holy Spirit speak through you. I’m currently reading the bible in a year and God is reveling things to be I haven’t seem before, His word truly is living she

  20. Chris - June 5, 2012 at 3:51 pm

Thanks Mike-This is AWESOME!. Your article is just too captivating-The materials are very annointed! They have great teachings and enlightement of one’s walk with the Lord.I am sharing the website to friends and relatives as much as I can.The articles are motivating, empowering and even transforming.
I am in the wilderness right now and everything you said about being in the wilderness in your article of prophesy is confirmed by my experiences beginning from a vision the lord showed me just before I entered the wilderness. Your sharing has energised me, empowered me and motivated me to take the enemy head on like David did to Goliath.I have felt lonely and troubled in this valley but the Lord shows up occassionally to strenghten me then hides again-ha ha ha ha-kid of. I feel like the Lord had the same kind of conversation with the devil over me like He did over Job! .I have never experienced such moment in my whole life where the lord seems un reachable! I had to became my own motivator lots of times and to look for something deeper in the lord. One of my all time weapon is the Blood of Jesus and it was fustration in the battle that made me to research the phrase “pleading the Blood of Jesus” (which brought me to you website) because I felt it was not doing what it should do when Iused it yet I beleived so strongly in it. Finally I discovered how to use it properly to get results from your site. The first time I used it as you stated I had victory over what I suspected were demonds trying to invade my 7 year old daughter.I have a lot of sitution yet to get the almighty God move. You have placed within my reach the throne of God, for my loved ones and friends as well. I can go on and on for ever.
May the Almighty God keep refilling you generously for Fresh annointed articles as you keep releasing and emptying them to the body of christ-This is what we need to ride the boat of our storms through this end times.
I shall share other major testimonies when they come.
    Blessings

  23. Cindy Flanders - December 17, 2012 at 3:12 pm

This has been an eye opener for me. I have so longed to get closer to God for so many years, to understand better. But I have been hindering my own growth by not understanding how to get away from the spirits that God would want to take away from me. I haven't been able to contain or rid myself of my controlling overbearing attitudes, and after reading this article, I have finally been able to see what I need to do! make a list according to the word of the bad traits that I carry, and replace them with the fruits of the Spirit! Thank you so much! I have also had instances that I have had an overwhelming sense of feelings coming from other people, even others in my church. It has prompted me to look into the 9 gifts of the spirit, specifically the gift of discerning spirits. Many times in my life I have had a sense that is so strong that I could not explain it. They come out of nowhere, and tug at me throughout the day. Though I am not as far along in my faith and Christian walk as I would like to be, I have a very strong urge to be farther, and this includes denying any belief in mediums, etc. I will never go to have my palm read. I believe that they are reaching spirits that should not be messed with, that are part of the occult. However, I do believe in the gifts of the Spirit, as many times, including in the middle of the Tornado that happened in my town, that the Holy spirit has been connected to me in that way. This is how I found this blog. I was researching the Gifts of the Holy spirit. I also thank you for the push to ask God to reveal what I feel He has been trying to reveal to me for a long time now. God Bless you!

This exposition is of great value to those who truly seek Him. I am deeply grateful for the insights. As we grow in the Lord to maturity, through sanctification all will be well. Thank you for this singular effort in pointing to the right direction.
May the Lord continually sustain this great ministry IJN.

I was saved at a very young age as far as I can remember I was erither 15 or 16 when I was reaaly born again and from there on it has not been an easy process finding the face of the Lord and alwasys doing what is right. At this moment I am 25 years old and have reached to a point where I can make sence of everything , where I can feel God working in me makining me a holy person each and everyday. Right now my mission is to change and ithrough this article and recently ive reliased that only God can change me. And after reading this article I can really feel that God is communicating with me in so many ways and so grateful to reliase there is a santification process taking place in my life .

Thank you God for this article

    • Chris - October 2, 2013 at 7:49 am

Shira, so glad to hear the article has helped you out. It’s big relief to know the change can only come from our Lord, it takes a load of pressure off ourselves but we still have our part in coming to Him and letting Him work in our lives. I have a saying, we can do it God’s way or we can do it …God’s way. meaning one is easy and one is, well, little bit rougher 🙂

praise God for opening up my inner eyes in this talk .now with the help of the holy spirit , am now able to share the crucial walk with my lord Jesus Christ effectively.it is helping at our church to grow spiritually in the word and the spiritual worship and it is making us come closer to our Lord.Sanctification is our only way towards our rapture. am looking forward to the second coming of our Lord with confidence. plse continue and do not give up to share what God has placed in your heart to reveal the truth which will make us free and free indeed. God bless us all who are reading these revelations of God.l

  27. Al - August 14, 2014 at 7:22 pm

I was reading your article and I have done a lot of studying on sanctification myself. I disagree with some of the things in your article and was wondering what scriptures you are referencing. I did not see any. Thank you.

  28. Paul - March 10, 2015 at 2:24 pm

I have experienced the love, peace and joy you talk about, and I just thought that I got it, I got the gospel, I understood grace and it allowed peace with God and allowed a supernatural feeling of peace and joy. Now I wonder if it is more a movement of sanctification, either way it is the Holy Spirit coming alive and working in and on me.
