14 Million Ethiopians Need Food Aid: ICA Responding

August 21, 2008 by Tina

Less than three months ago, UNICEF reported, “Six million children in Ethiopia may starve to death from malnutrition.” Earlier today USA Today increased the number to more than 14 million Ethiopians-18% of the nation. International Crisis Aid (ICA) continues to supply food aid to those most at risk of starvation, in addition to implementing long-term solutions.

ICA President Pat Bradley stated, “ICA has been working in Ethiopia for 5 years. This year is the worse we have seen as it relates to starvation. In one area we are currently working in we estimate there are 4,000 severely malnourished children who need immediate assistance.”

ICA-a St Louis-based humanitarian organization-has operated in Ethiopia since 2003, making the agency perfectly positioned to begin immediate emergency food distributions in several areas within the country. ICA has long-term, holistic solutions to end the chronic problem of hunger in Ethiopia, including teaching soil conservation and modern farming practices.

Over 75,000 children are severely malnourished. Oxfam calls the situation in Ethiopia “a toxic cocktail”-its ingredients: drought that in some places killed the entire spring crop; global inflation that has doubled the price of food; armed rebellion in the Somali region that has disrupted food delivery; and assorted plagues, from insects to hailstones.

Since 1985 the population has doubled to almost 80 million, and per-capita farm production has declined while the global cost of raising and moving food keeps rising.

Individuals, foundations or companies interested in becoming involved in relief efforts and long-term solutions with International Crisis Aid are encouraged to contact the agency at 1-888-740-7779 or by email at info at crisisaid.org or by visiting their website at http://www.crisisaid.org/
